It’s hard to believe that 23 years have passed since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Though time has moved on, the impact of that day remains ever-present in our collective memory. As we reflect on this somber anniversary, we want to share a story that exemplifies the countless moments of bravery and humanity.
Meet Stanley Praimnath, who went to work as usual on 9/11. The sun was shining, and the sky was clear — just another day in downtown Manhattan. Stanley was a bank executive working on the 81st floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. When the first plane struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m., Stanley knew something was wrong and immediately made his way toward the exit. But when he reached the ground floor, building security assured him that the South Tower was secure, and he reluctantly returned to his office.
Just minutes later, the phone rang. A colleague from Chicago was calling to check on him. In the middle of their conversation, Stanley happened to glance out the window. What he saw next would change his life forever: a massive plane heading straight for him. He dropped the phone, dove under his desk, and prayed. In an instant, the plane’s wing sliced through his office, leaving Stanley buried in debris. Miraculously, he was alive — but trapped.
Three floors above, Brian Clark, a volunteer fire warden, was faced with a life-or-death decision of his own. Leading a group of survivors down the stairs, Brian was stopped by a woman who urged them to go back up to escape the flames. While the group debated, Brian heard a faint voice calling out for help. Ignoring the advice to head upward, Brian decided to search for the source of the voice. With a small flashlight in hand, he made his way through the wreckage until he finally found a gap in the rubble — a gap just big enough for a desperate hand to reach through. It was Stanley.
Brian knew they had to move quickly. With smoke thickening and heat rising, he urged Stanley to jump. Summoning all his strength, Stanley leaped high enough for Brian to grab him and pull him to safety. Together, they began their descent — navigating 81 floors through smoke, water, and debris. It took nearly fifty minutes, but they made it out alive. Once they reached safety, Stanley broke down in tears, telling those around him, “I think this man saved my life.” Brian responded, “Stanley, I think you might have saved mine, too.”
The Takeaway: Hope Endures
As we remember 9/11 in 2024, we honor the bravery of people like Stanley Praimnath and Brian Clark. Their story reminds us that in the darkest of times, hope, courage, and human connection can light the way. While the attacks were the worst acts of terrorism our nation has ever known, it’s not the terror that endures — it’s the inspiration. It’s the bravery, the sacrifice, and the unbreakable bonds forged that day.
While the towers fell, our spirit as a nation stood firm. And as time passes, it’s stories like these that remind us: Hope and heroism endure forever.
About VALUABLES
Many financial advisors focus on communicating with clients to provide complex analysis of the investment markets and economies. However, we have learned that most clients are not particularly interested in this complex analysis. Most clients hire an advisor for their knowledge of the markets, not for their ability to explain that knowledge. Most want to know what time it is, not how to build a watch.
