It’s holiday movie season, and I was recently thinking about an often-remade classic, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. I wondered, what gives this story its staying power and potency? And why are we still learning the lessons over and over again?
Beyond its seasonal charm, this classic tale holds profound wisdom about life, relationships, and what truly matters. It invites us to reflect on our own journeys. It challenges us to balance our priorities, appreciate the present, and make meaningful changes — lessons that resonate far beyond the holiday season. The redemptive story of Ebenezer Scrooge continues to be relevant year after year.
As I revisited the movie again this year, here were four key lessons that really resonated with me:
Lesson 1: It’s Never Too Late to Change
Scrooge’s transformation is one of literature’s most powerful reminders — change is always possible. Despite years of bitterness and isolation, a single night of reflection and revelation alters his path forever.
This lesson extends far beyond fiction. In life and wealth, it’s never too late to revise your plans, recalibrate your priorities, or ensure your financial resources align with what truly matters to you. Perhaps it’s spending more time with family, giving back to your community, or pursuing long-held dreams. Change may feel daunting, but Scrooge shows us that even small steps can set us on a more meaningful course.
Take a moment to reflect: What shifts in your life could bring you closer to where you want to be?
Lesson 2: Appreciate the Present Moment
The Ghost of Christmas Present tells Scrooge to embrace the now. Too often, we become fixated on what’s next — the next milestone, the next financial goal, the next big trip — forgetting to savor the joys of today.
In our modern world, this tendency to look ahead can easily steal the beauty of the present. Scrooge’s journey reminds us to pause, spend undistracted time with loved ones, and practice gratitude for what we already have.
This season, try slowing down to appreciate the small moments, like a laugh with family, the warmth of a shared meal, or the quiet contentment of a winter evening. These are the moments that make life truly rich.
Lesson 3: Wealth’s True Purpose Lies in Connection
At the start of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is consumed by wealth accumulation, blind to its impact on those around him. His transformation reveals a profound truth: Wealth is most meaningful when it strengthens relationships and contributes to others’ well-being.
Consider how your resources can nurture your connections with others. Perhaps it’s supporting a cause you care about, investing in shared experiences with loved ones, or creating a legacy that extends your values to future generations. True wealth is not about numbers; it’s about the lives we touch.
Lesson 4: Keep Your Word and Honor Commitments
Scrooge’s redemption is marked not just by his newfound joy, but by his determination to live differently. He turns his promises into action, making amends to those he’d wronged and keeping his word.
This serves as a reminder that personal accountability matters. Whether in relationships, business, or financial planning, keeping our promises, both big and small, helps us build trust and honor our values.
How can you ensure your actions align with your intentions? Living with integrity enriches your life and the lives of those around you.
Writing Your Own Redemption Story
The holiday season is a natural time for reflection. Like Scrooge, we all have the power to change our own story, creating a future where our values, time, and resources align harmoniously. It’s never too late to start living fully, embracing the present, and making choices that reflect what matters most.

About VALUABLES
Many financial advisors focus on communicating with clients to provide complex analysis of the investment markets and economies. However, we have learned that most clients are not particularly interested in this complex analysis. Most clients hire an advisor for their knowledge of the markets, not for their ability to explain that knowledge. Most want to know what time it is, not how to build a watch.
Experience has taught us that wealthy families care most about using their wealth as a means to a desirable end, which is to achieve a more satisfying, fulfilled and impactful life, and to fulfill their most important Life Values.
VALUABLES is a periodic article series focused on the concepts, systems, and habits which we have observed among families who have been successful in this quest to use their wealth as a tool to live a life of significance. The most successful families share a set of habits, systems, and insights which enable them to use their wealth as a tool to fulfill their Values and what is most important to them.
We named this article series VALUABLES, because it provides an exploration of those habits, systems, and insights. We hope it will help you to consider your assets and possessions which are most valuable to you, and how you can use your financial wealth to enhance and cultivate your true “Valuables”.
